I live west of Boston, am single with three grown children - a son Mark who is 30, a daughter Katie who is 26 and an honorary daughter Jess who is 24. My honorary grandson James (Jess's son) was born 7/21/05. I am proud to be James's "Gram."
A 1999 graduate of Wellesley College, as part of the Davis Degree Program I met the same requirements as traditional-age students but was and continue to be a member of the community of non-traditional-age women who are proud to call themselves Davis Scholars.
I love to read, to laugh, to learn, and to talk about and/or apply what I learn. I am an avid NPR listener and read NYTimes.com daily. I like to take tests and quizzes and am constantly exploring, categorizing, synthesizing and analyzing information.
I am a traveler. I carry in my heart all the places I've been fortunate enough to experience and am always planning the next two or three trips. I lived in Christchurch, New Zealand, for a year and worked outside Amsterdam for three months. I've been to Alaska and Australia, Kansas and Scotland, Chicago and Ireland, and many other places. I've started a tradition for my birthdays ending in 0 and 5: I spent the week of my 50th birthday in and around London and took the Chunnel train to Paris (the ticket was a birthday gift from Mark) for the actual day of my birthday. I celebrated my 55th with a weekend in NYC where I got together with old and new friends, overdosed on art museums and saw The History Boys (another birthday gift from Mark).
Wherever I go, whatever I'm doing, I find large and small delights. This world is so beautiful, and even though I tend to see and think globally I am aware that I am extremely fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places of all: New England.
When I travel I devour architecture, history and art but also look for grocery stores, hardware stores and public transportation. I want to learn how the residents lived then and now. My very favorite travel experiences are conversations I've had with local residents. In choosing destinations, I'm definitely a city mouse. I am fascinated by technology, and unlike the 19th century Romanticists, am frequently awed by the juxtaposition of technology and nature. The few photographs I take when traveling tend to be this kind of image. On my list for the future are Venice, Iceland, and the Silk Road.
Last but by no means least, I have a special place in my heart for those who deal with behavioral health issues and/or are survivors of abuse. We have made some progress in this world on these issues but still have a long long way to go.
